Ford Has Trademarked the Skyline Name in the U.S.

When we hear the name Skyline, the first things that come to our minds are iconic coupes from Nissan's golden era that dominated Japan's racing world in the Nineties. What we don't think about is Ford. Yet, for some reason, the Blue Oval has just trademarked the Skyline name in the United States. Huh?

The filing, submitted by Ford on July 12, 2021 and first spotted by Ford Authority, can be found here in the United States Patent and Trademark Office database. Other than being classified under "Motor land vehicles, namely, SUVs, trucks and automobiles," there isn't much of a description on the site otherwise.

A Ford spokesperson gave Road & Track the following statement when reached for comment via email:

While the American automaker hasn't ever used the Skyline name in the past, it has used the name Skyliner a number of times, per Ford Authority. It appeared as a trim level on four cars: the Crestline, the Fairlane Crown Victoria, the Fairlane 500, and the Galaxie, all throughout the Fifties. There was also the Ford Transit Skyliner concept, which debuted in 2014.

While Nissan no longer classifies its flagship GT-R as a Skyline, the nameplate is still used on a car sold in Japan we know in the U.S. as the Infiniti Q50.
