Forbes' list of top billionaires is out: Why Kylie Jenner and Jay-Z didn't make the cut

Despite certainly not being strapped for cash, major stars like Kylie Jenner and Jay-Z didn't make it on this year's Forbes 400 list of wealthiest Americans.

While the criteria for minimum net worth ($2.1 billion) hasn't changed, the average net worth of the list members rose $200 million, with a new average of $7.4 billion. Which means celebrities like Jenner and Jay-Z, each with a measly $1 billion as of the list's release, didn't make the cut.

Jenner made headlines in March when Forbes named her the youngest self-made billionaire at just 21. But many took issue with the term "self-made," considering the reality star is the youngest of the famous Kardashian-Jenner clan, sparking debate over whether her success as a beauty businesswoman was indeed "self-made," or merely a byproduct of being born into an already-famous and wealthy family.

And Jay-Z recently crossed the billionaire threshold, becoming the first hip-hop artist to become a billionaire this summer, thanks to lucrative investments in real estate, art, liquor and businesses like Uber.
