High School Football: Rising seniors who could see their recruiting pick up this spring

Spring football practices are a prime opportunity for high school players to get noticed by college coaches.

Players who have gone under the radar or are late bloomers can see their prospects change in an afternoon. Others who have a handful of Power Five offers can establish themselves as an upper-tier recruit.

Here's a look at some rising seniors in Florida who could see their recruiting pick up over the next few weeks.

Gabriel Birnbaum (Monarch DL)

Birnbaum put up the kind of numbers in 2022 that make people pause and take notice. He finished the season with 69 tackles, 33 tackles for loss and 14 sacks. The 6-foot-3, 260-pounder has the ability to get in the backfield consistently. He picked up his first Division I offer from Bethune-Cookman in April.

Ebenezer Bouzi (Naples DB)

Bouzi is expected to take on a larger role in the Naples secondary in his final season, taking over for Jonas Duclona (Wisconsin), Kerry Brown (Minnesota) and Thompson Defhommes (Presbyterian). Bouzi currently holds offers from Florida State, Louisville, Maryland, UMass, Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan. He finished with 25 tackles, an interception and a forced fumble in 2022.

Jerome Carter (Columbia S)

Columbia's Jerome Carter (21) tackles Trinity Christian Academy's Darnell Rogers (4) during the third quarter of a regular season football game Friday, Sept. 23, 2022 at Trinity Christian Academy in Jacksonville. Trinity Christian Academy defeated the Columbia Tigers 43-30.

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Carter is coming off a breakout season in 2022 when he recorded 104 tackles, five interceptions and 10 passes defended to help the Tigers reach the final four.  Carter has offers from Indiana, Iowa State, USF, West Virginia and others.

Mason Carter (Baldwin EDGE)

Momentum is building for the 6-5, 200-pound Carter, who has picked up his first two FBS offers (Navy and FIU) within the past few weeks. He recorded 43 tackles, three fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and five pass breakups as a junior, and for his senior year, he's attracting attention as an edge rushing prospect. Carter is also a track athlete, clearing 6 feet in the high jump.

Brock Clayton (Fort Walton Beach WR)

Clayton is an interesting case, primarily because he’s a standout baseball player who’s been committed to Florida for more than a year and is currently still in season (at least at the time of this writing). But he also is a 6-foot-3, 200-pound deep threat who caught four touchdown passes last season. FAU recently offered. More could be coming.

Andre Devine (North Fort Myers RB)

The son of former West Virginia standout running back Noel Devine, Andre is a shifty runner who doesn’t need a lot of space to make guys miss. He’s also a player who can line up in the slot. He already has a handful of Group of Five offers as well as one from the Mountaineers.

Caleb Goodloe (Clearwater Central Catholic WR)

Goodloe is a player who already has seen his recruitment pick up this year with offers from Kansas, Wake Forest, West Virginia and others. Considering his size (6-foot-1, 188 pounds), long arms and playmaking ability, it’s no surprise. He caught 50 passes for 617 yards and 10 touchdowns at Calvary Christian last season.

Trever Jackson (West Orange QB)

OK, Jackson doesn’t really fit the profile of this list. He isn’t under the radar. Not anymore at least. But this is a list of players who could see their recruiting pick up and that’s been the expectation for Jackson since Texas A&M offered on April 18. Since then, Penn State, West Virginia and Houston have offered. More will come.

Q’Zorian Kennedy (Villages Charter ATH)

Kennedy missed last season with a knee injury, but he’s healthy and had a great offseason. He’s a dynamic playmaker and a tremendous route runner and is easy to project as a slot receiver at 5-foot-9, 157 pounds. Penn State offered in March.

Edward Louis (Dillard WR)

Louis and fellow Dillard wide receiver Marcus Striggles both could be on this list. The speedy Louis stands 5-foot-7, 160 pounds, but often lined up as an outside receiver last fall. He gets open both wherever he lines up, evidenced by his 800 yards and six touchdowns last fall. He currently has Power Five offers from Louisville and Nebraska.

Josh Porter (Fort Meade WR)

Fort Meade's Josh Porter catches a 25-yard touchdown pass in front of Parker Galberaith on the first play of the second quarter on Sept. 8, 2022, at Viking Stadium.

Porter (6-foot, 182 pounds) has posted back-to-back seasons with at least 35 catches and 600 yards. He caught 38 passes for 635 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2002. Porter, whose lone offer is from Colorado, is a strong route runner with the ability to line up both outside and in the slot.

Joshua Raymond (Lake Mary OL)

Raymond started to see his recruiting pick up earlier this year as Vanderbilt, USF, Marshall and others offered. Raymond is another player who had another strong camp season. He has good size at 6-foot-4, 280 pounds and starts at left tackle for Lake Mary but could end up bumping inside at the next level.

Tyreek’e Robinson (Manatee DL)

The 6-foot-1, 318-pound Robinson isn’t exactly a secret. He does have a handful of Power Five offers, including Auburn, Colorado, Miami, N.C. State and Texas. But it still feels like he has gone under the radar through much of the recruiting process. That could change when teams take a closer look at him this spring.

Ezaiah Shine (Mainland CB)

Colleges are definitely starting to take notice of the 6-foot-2, 180-pound Shine. The former quarterback has offers from Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Maryland, Ole Miss, UCF and others. It’s a strong list, but it could grow in the next few weeks.

Derrick Williams (Vero Beach ATH)

Vero Beach usually has at least one late bloomer who goes under the radar until their senior year. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Williams is a strong candidate for the honors this year thanks in part to his track results: 10.77 seconds in the 100-meters and 21.4 in the 200. Rhode Island has offered, more could be coming.

Michael Wright III (Palm Beach Gardens S)

Wright, an FAU commit, had 46 tackles, an interception and two fumble recoveries for Gardens in 2022. The 5-foot-11, 176-pounder is a playmaker who can come downhill against the run or play a deep safety role. Indiana, Temple and others had offered before he committed in April.

Young, who transferred from Auburndale, is a fast-rising cornerback who committed to FIU after an unofficial visit in late April. Akron and UAB also have offered in the past few weeks. Given Young’s height (6-foot-2) and speed, it would be a surprise if more schools didn’t try to get in on him.
