The Foo FightersChris Shiflett catches up with Kyle Meredith to dig into his latest solo album, Lost at Sea, his thoughts on country and rock’s feud, and more.

Chatting about his history with Americana and country rock music, Shiflett admits that he finds that the most interesting guitar playing comes from country music. “To people who don’t listen to country music, they just think that all country music is the one version of the corniest ‘yee-haw’ that you can point your finger at, as opposed to what it really is, which is this massive umbrella [that has] a lot of different sounds and a lot of different styles,” he explains. “Country music is one of the last things people can openly make fun of.”

He goes on discuss out how bands like Social Distortion and X helped bridge the gap between punk and Americana, how his days in No Use for a Name influenced one of his new songs, and how his sobriety manifests in his work. He also touches on his new podcast Shred with Shifty, which features guests like Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready. “It’s a deep dive on guitar playing,” he says. “But it’s also about having all of these different players getting into the weeds of how they built these guitar solos.”
