Fondue Fest, 4-time Grammy-nominated band top Fond du Lac's can't-miss events this week

FOND DU LAC - This week offers a chance to see the Grammy-nominated band Yarn at the Thrasher and an opportunity to sample all kinds of fondue at the annual Fondue Fest.

You could also attend Fall Crush Fest at Vines and Rushes and see how your wine is made.

Here are five can’t-miss events happening in the community this week.

1. Yarn to perform live at Thrasher in Green Lake

Four-time Grammy-nominated band Yarn will perform Sept. 9 at Thrasher Opera House in Green Lake. The show begins at 7:30 p.m.

“We tell stories, live and in the studio, truth and fiction,” singer/songwriter Blake Christiana said in a news release. “We don’t always opt for consistency. ... There’s a difference in every show also; you never know what you’ll get.”

The group has produced 10 studio albums, gathering millions of streams on Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon; and earned the “Download of the Day” from Rolling Stone, among many other accolades.

2. Fondue Fest takes over Fond du Lac's Main Street

The 15th annual Fondue Fest is set to take over downtown Fond du Lac from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 9. Events will be held along Main Street from Merrill to Western avenues.

There will be three stages of music all day, a kids' zone, arts and crafts vendors, a farmers' market, a car show and more. Cheese and chocolate fondue will be prepared by Moraine Park Technical College culinary students, starting at 10 a.m.

For the festival each year, between 70 and 90 pounds of cheese is melted into a fondue recipe.

3. Watch 'grape crushing' at Vines and Rushes Fall Crush Fest

Vines and Rushes Winery will hold its Fall Crush Fest 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 9. Admission is free.

Enjoy food, wine, live music and awlk through the winery and watch the “grape crushing” process.

Food will be served 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Live music from 1 to 4 p.m. will be provided by Dan Braaksma & Al Muenchow, with Kyle Megna & Ross Catterton performing 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The winery is at 410 County E, Ripon.

4. Bluegrass band Miles Over Mountains offers live music at Ziegler

Miles Over Mountains will provide live music from 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 8 at Ziegler Winery, W3953 Winnebago Heights Road, Malone.

Miles Over Mountains is a bluegrass band from Illinois. They perform original material and a variety of cover songs in their own unique style.

More than 25 wines are on the tasting menu at Ziegler, along with plenty of appetizers. Must be 21 and older.

5. Create a unique mug during Thelma workshop

Create a personalized dye sublimation mug during a workshop from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts, 51 Sheboygan St., Fond du Lac.

The instructor is Trista Holz. All experience levels and ages are welcome, though ages 5-16 must be accompanied by a parent. All materials will be provided.

The cost is $30 or $24 for Thelma members. Register at thelmaarts.org.
