Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho are expected to be drafted into Gareth Southgate’s England senior squad next week ahead of internationals with Spain and Switzerland next month.

The flourishing youth policy, which was the basis for England’s progression to the World Cup semi-finals, will continue apace with the inclusion of the two 18-year-olds likely to gain valuable experience.

Foden has been one of the few home-grown teenagers to have broken into the Manchester City side, while Sancho, who left the Sky Blues for Borussia Dortmund, has likewise gained valuable playing time.

Southgate wants to bring them into the squad as he builds towards the 2020 European Championships and 2022 World Cup.

Foden impressed in the Community Shield earlier this month and following the injury to Kevin De Bruyne, may get more game-time for the champions in the next few weeks and it is understood that Southgate has spoken to City boss Pep Guardiola about his development and availability.

Sancho was surplus to requirements at the Etihad and the academy product and left for a fee of £8million in August. He made a substitute appearance in the German Cup last week.

Southgate will also include Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, who missed the World Cup squad through injury, but has been hugely impressive in the opening weeks of the season.

Others under consideration are Wolves centre-back and skipper Conor Coady, Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson and Leicester midfielder James Maddison.

England face Spain in the inaugural UEFA Nations League A, Group 4 clash against Spain at Wembley on September 8, followed by the Kick It Out intentional against Switzerland three days later at the King Power Stadium, Leicester.
