Florida Teacher and Basketball Coach Found Dead in Storm Drain Near School Gym: 'Tragic Accident'

No foul play is suspected in the death of Dexter Butler, although police say an investigation into his death is ongoing

A Florida teacher and basketball coach was found dead in a storm drain near the school gymnasium on Saturday, police said.

Key West police and fire departments were dispatched early Saturday to Key West High School regarding an injured person, police said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. When they arrived, they found "an adult male in a storm drain near the school gymnasium."

The man was later identified as Dexter Butler of Key West, police added.

The investigation is ongoing although no foul play is suspected.

"Monroe County School District is sorry to announce that their beloved teacher and Coach, Dexter Butler, died today in a tragic accident," the district said in a statement over the weekend, which was obtained by PEOPLE. "We offer our sincere condolences to his family and to all students who knew and worked with him."

"The accident which took his life is under investigation. Further details will be released as they become available," the statement read.

“The School District Community is devastated by this loss of our wonderful teacher and coach," Superintendent Theresa Axford added in a statement.

"At HOB this morning, I could feel the immense sense of loss with both teachers [and] students.  They were definitely trying to understand a reality that is all too painful to deal with," Axford continued. "We hope that God gives the family the strength to manage this terrible tragedy and our prayers are with them on a daily basis."

Axford previously told Keys Weekly that Butler fell while he was reaching for his keys, which had fallen into the storm drain. However, when reached on Monday, a police spokesperson told PEOPLE that detectives have mentioned that those events "may not be fully accurate."

In a message to PEOPLE, Axford said she couldn't comment on the matter, noting that the investigation is ongoing and being handled by police.

Butler spent around 14 years working at the high school and at Horace O’Bryant Middle School, the school district told the Miami Herald. He previously coached youth baseball at the middle school and junior varsity baseball at the high school.

In a Facebook post by the middle school's activities and events page, Butler was described as being "deeply" impactful "to the school community."

"Dexter was an integral part of the HOB staff, teaching 6th grade history and he also held various coaching baseball and basketball positions including his current role as head KWHS Varsity Boys Basketball coach," the school district said in a statement.

A candlelight vigil was also held in his honor on Sunday night outside the school.

On Monday, counselors, social workers and other support staff were made available to students and staff.

Additionally, there were "opportunities for all to write cards to the family, put messages on a large poster and many middle school students brought flowers that were placed by the gym in [memory] of their beloved coach and teacher," the school district said.
