Florida State beats Louisiana-Monroe in makeup game, keeps bowl streak alive

Florida State is heading to a bowl game. The Seminoles’ rescheduled game vs. Louisiana-Monroe was not for naught.

FSU, led by interim coach Odell Haggins in his first game as the team’s head coach, beat Louisiana-Monroe 42-10 to move to 6-6 and keep its bowl streak alive. The win means the Seminoles are bowl eligible and will head to a postseason game for the 36th-straight season. It’s the longest streak in college football.

And Haggins got a Powerade bath after the win too.

The Seminoles’ game vs. ULM was canceled in Week 2 because of Hurricane Maria. As the season went on and the ‘Noles struggled, the game was rescheduled for the Saturday of conference championship week so Florida State could have a chance at reaching a bowl game.

The rescheduled game also came a day after coach Jimbo Fisher’s departure to Texas A&M. Fisher signed a 10-year, $75 million contract with the school Friday after he resigned from FSU. Oregon coach Willie Taggart has been mentioned as the strongest candidate to replace Fisher at Florida State.

Florida State did most of its damage against the Warhawks on the ground on Saturday. FSU ran for 305 yards and five touchdowns as Jacques Patrick and Cam Akers both had over 100 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback James Blackman was 14-22 for 197 yards passing and a touchdown, though he threw two interceptions.

The bowl Florida State ends up in won’t be glamorous. At 3-5 in the ACC and 6-6 overall, Florida State will be at the bottom of the ACC selection pool with Duke and Virginia.
