After flirting with Tennessee, Dave Doeren gets new deal at NC State
Tennessee’s apparent pursuit of NC State head coach Dave Doeren came to an end Thursday.
As the Vols’ coaching search continues to meander, the school reportedly contacted Doeren about the opening but he, as reported by Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel, opted to return for his sixth season with the Wolfpack.

NC State announced Thursday afternoon that a contract extension for Doeren has been agreed to, pending approval from the school’s Board of Trustees. Details of Doeren’s new deal were not immediately available.
“Dave has made significant strides in developing a complete program at NC State, and this new contract continues our commitment to his leadership,” said NC State athletic director Debbie Yow. “We want to support the continued growth of the program under Dave, the culture he has established, the competitive and academic gains he’s helped us achieve and his continued progress in recruiting.”
NC State finished the regular season with an 8-4 record, including six wins in ACC play. It has been the best season of his tenure in Raleigh. Overall, Doeren has a 33-30 (15-25 ACC) record at the school.
“My heart is at NC State, my family and I are truly grateful to Chancellor (Randy) Woodson and Athletic Director Debbie Yow for the opportunity to continue to build on the momentum we have here in Raleigh,” said Doeren. “We’re building a championship culture, we have first-class facilities, incredible fan support and I’m honored to continue to lead the Wolfpack.”
NC State will learn its bowl destination on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Tennessee rolls on with another new name reportedly entering the fray: recently-fired Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin.
