‘The Flight Attendant’ Renewed for Season 2 at HBO Max

The day after “The Flight Attendant” season finale premiered on HBO Max, the streaming service announced Friday it was renewing the Kaley Cuoco-starring series, which appears to be one of the nascent streaming service’s first-word-of-mouth hits. The stylish, eight-episode dramedy thriller premiered to strong reviews on Nov. 26, and ended its first season by tying up its central mystery, while also setting the table for further adventures for its lead character, Cassie Bowden (Cuoco). The announcement was made by Casey Bloys, chief content officer of HBO and HBO Max.

The show, based on Chris Bohjalian’s novel, was adapted by Steve Yockey, and is produced by Warner Bros. Television, Berlanti Productions and Cuoco’s Yes, Norman Productions. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Cuoco and Yockey are executive producers, and Suzanne McCormack is co-executive producer.

Both Cuoco and Yockey have said that even though “The Flight Attendant” was designed to be a limited series, they wanted to do more.

In the first episode of “The Flight Attendant,” Cassie, a flight attendant who drinks too much, wakes up after a night of partying with a rich passenger (Michiel Huisman), only to find him murdered in his hotel bed. She sets about trying to solve his murder — and exonerating herself — but gets entangled in a murderous web of high-tech, high-finance shenanigans. She nearly gets killed in the process (many times), but along the way works through her tumultuous childhood, and begins to see the value in making different choices for herself, her friends and her brother (T.R. Knight).

Rosie Perez, Zosia Mamet, Michelle Gomez, Colin Woodell, Merle Dandridge, Griffin Matthews and Nolan Gerard Funk also star in Season 1. One loose end from the show involves Perez’s character Megan, who, in a parallel story, has gotten herself into quite a situation.

“We could not be more pleased to embark on another adventure with our incredible partners at Yes, Norman, Kaley and Suzanne, our wonderful creator Steve Yockey, as well as our collaborators at WBTV and HBO Max,” said Berlanti and Schechter in a statement. “We are thrilled that people have responded so positively to our beloved show, and in particular Kaley Cuoco’s incredible, tour de force performance.”

Streaming services being streaming services, ratings for “The Flight Attendant” are not available. But the renewal press release said, “The first season saw week over week growth and ranked as HBO Max’s No. 1 series overall during its run.”
