The film narrates the astoundingly real tale of Amin Nawabi, a man who struggles with a painful secret he has concealed for twenty years. It depicts Amin’s refugee journey from Afghanistan to Denmark. Amin arrived in Copenhagen by himself, having escaped Afghanistan during the First Afghan Civil War in the 1980s and 1990s as the Mujahideen gained strength. The documentary explores Amin’s close relationship with his family and his battle to reconcile his sexuality with his strict cultural upbringing. Each one of his accounts opens with an animated portrayal of Amin, who is close-shaven, bearded, wearing a gold chain, and seems tired from the world, lounging on a couch and looking straight at us.
The film features Amin Nawabi as himself in the present day. Daniel Karimyar and Fardin Mijdzadeh portray Amin at ages 9-11 and 15-18 respectively. Jonas Poher Rasmussen stars as himself, and Kasper as Amin’s boyfriend. Furthermore, Belal Faiz, and Milad Eskandari star as Saif at ages 13-19 and 8 respectively. Meanwhile, Zahra Mehrwarz and Elaha Faiz feature as Fahima at ages 28 and 13-26 respectively. Sadia Faiz features as Sabia from ages 16 to 26.
