Flatbush Zombies member Meechy Darko is stepping into the spotlight with his debut solo album, Gothic Luxury, out August 26th via Loma Vista Recordings. As a first taste, the rapper has offered up the scathing new single “Kill Us All (K.U.A.).”
Executive produced by longtime Kid Cudi collaborator Dot Da Genius, Gothic Luxury was made after Meechy’s father was killed in early 2020 at the hands of Miami police. Although the Brooklyn native has always addressed societal ills, the tragic incident pushed him to get even more personal on the album — in particular, he tackles both police brutality and the importance of seeking help for mental health issues.
“I had no choice but to make this the most personal thing I’ve ever done because fortunately or unfortunately, I’m in an extremely soul-stirring part of my life right now,” Meechy said in a statement. “Who I was yesterday may not be who I am tomorrow. I’m not who I was last week. There’s no telling who I’ll be next year or the year after, so it’s very important to capture this while I can still feel.”

Over a dark, sinister beat, Meechy tackles the issues faced by Black Americans on “Kill Us All,” whether it’s the criminally unjust legal system, biased media coverage, or the systemic racism built into the government itself. “Democrat, Republican, they all evil to me,” he raps. “But remember that the Democrats started the KKK/ I turn on CNN and they tell me that I’m okay.”

Flatbush Zombies’ most recent project was their 2020 charity EP now, more than ever. Their last full-length was 2018’s Vacation in Hell. In December, the trio teamed up with RZA for the single “Quentin Tarantino.”
