The good ship Revenge will sail no more.

Our Flag Means Death is walking the plank.

David Jenkins' heartfelt pirate comedy has been canceled by Max, the streamer confirmed Tuesday. The news comes after the show aired its second season last fall, chronicling the unexpected love story between pirate captains Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) and Blackbeard (Taika Waititi).

"While Max will not be moving forward with a third season of Our Flag Means Death, we are so proud of the joyous, hilarious, and heartfelt stories that creator David Jenkins, Taika Waititi, Rhys Darby, Garrett Basch, Dan Halsted, Adam Stein, Antoine Douaihy, and the entire superb cast and crew brought to life," a Max spokesperson said in a statement. "We also thank the dedicated fans who embraced these stories and built a gorgeous, inclusive community surrounding the show."

Our Flag Means Death quickly earned a hardcore fan base for its goofy swashbuckling comedy and heartfelt queer representation. The show was loosely inspired by the real adventures of "gentleman pirate" Stede Bonnet, who abandoned his privileged upbringing to seek adventure on the high seas, eventually teaming up with the legendary Blackbeard.

Jenkins confirmed the axing on social media, thanking Max and the show's fandom for embracing his ragtag band of oddballs. "I'm very sad I won't set foot on the Revenge again with my friends," he wrote. "Some of whom have become close to family. But I couldn't be more grateful for being allowed to captain the damn thing in the first place."

The season 2 finale, which aired in October, found Stede and Blackbeard settling down, hanging up their pirate hats to run an inn together as their shipmates took the Revenge and sailed off to new adventures. Jenkins previously told EW that he wanted the season 2 finale to end in "a good place," a well-deserved happy ending for everyone's favorite star-crossed sea captains.

"We'll see if it makes sense for them to make a third one,” Jenkins said last year. "We have a lot of ideas for a third season, and there's a lot more story to tell. But if it's not in the cards, I just wanted to leave Stede and Blackbeard in a good place. Instead of seeing them get punished for following each other, I wanted to see a moment where they're all right. And it is just a moment: I think a relationship is going to take a lot of work for them."

Still, he added that he had plenty of ideas for where the Revenge might sail next, especially if the show got picked up for a third season.

"I mean, the Revenge is now being captained by Frenchie, and I think Frenchie's Revenge would be an interesting place to work and an interesting ship to be boarded by," Jenkins explained. "And Ed and Stede, they're in the early 30s part of their relationship. Emotionally, they're going to move in together and start a business. I think there's a whole other story to tell about what happens when that relationship gets more mature. How do you make that relationship work? It's not just happily ever after. You have to work at it. And that's a story I'd like to see.”

In addition to Darby and Waititi, Our Flag Means Death starred Con O'Neill, Vico Ortiz, Joel Fry, Kristian Nairn, Samson Kayo, Nathan Foad, Matthew Maher, and Leslie Jones.
