"Being abused changes the whole of your nervous system," the singer, who sued ex Shia LaBeouf in 2020, told 'British Vogue' in a new cover story

FKA Twigs is reflecting on the aftermath of her breakup from Shia LaBeouf and what her personal life looks like now in her relationship with Jordan Hemingway.

In a new cover story for British Vogue, the 36-year-old singer and actress said of her split from LaBeouf, “I think naively I thought it would be like any other breakup, that I’d be sad for six months to a year, and then one day I’d wake up and everything would be fine."

Twigs (born Tahliah Debrett Barnett) previously accused LaBeouf, 37, of "relentless abuse" in a lawsuit against the actor in December 2020. (LaBeouf denied "each and every allegation" brought against him by Twigs in a response to her suit, which he filed in February 2021.)

"But the fact is being abused changes the whole of your nervous system,” Twigs admitted to British Vogue. “Because my window of tolerance is now much smaller than it used to be, my body manifests stress in quite extreme ways — it really shows me when it’s upset.”

A rep for LaBeouf did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment on Thursday.

In a previous interview with The New York Times, Twigs called her experience with LaBeouf "the worst thing I've ever been through in the whole of my life."

The British musician, who costarred with LaBeouf in Honey Boy, added, "I don't think people would ever think that it would happen to me. But I think that's the thing. It can happen to anybody."

In a letter to his former Don't Worry Darling director Olivia Wilde, published by Variety in August 2022, LaBeouf denied Wilde's claims that he was fired from her movie.

He also referenced his "failings with Twigs," calling them "fundamental and real" but "not the narrative that has been presented."

"There is a time and a place to deal with such things, and I am trying to navigate a nuanced situation with respect for her and the truth, hence my silence," he told Wilde, 40, in the email.

Twigs revealed in March 2023 that she was dating Hemingway, a photographer, director and cinematographer, whom she said at the time had "restored my faith in love."

In her interview with British Vogue, she replied when asked about whether it was a challenge to invest trust in their romance, “You know it just takes the right person."

“I’ve kissed a few frogs to get there but I feel that Jordan listens to me and opens me up in a way that no one really has ever been able to," the "Killer" singer added.

She also touched on the nature of their relationship given her notoriety: “When I’m with somebody who’s not in the public eye in the way I am, I’m conscious of everything I can do to make that situation as comfortable as possible because I’ve been on the other side of it."

"And it’s really not nice,” Twigs explained. “Right now I feel so ready to stand up for things that I believe in, to protect people who I love.”

Since her breakup from LaBeouf, Twigs told the outlet, “I’ve had to be very compassionate with myself and really listen to myself to get better."

"Now I want to challenge myself to know more about the simple, most pure and important things: love, nature, food, a nontoxic lifestyle, my body,” she said. “The path I’m on is not the pastel-pink-yoga-leggings aesthetic.”

And now? “I feel that I’m getting to a point of abundance in which I’m a bigger, stronger, more tenacious woman than I’ve ever been,” The Crow star added.
