Five vehicles hit, nearly 50 shell casings found at scene of Maryland Avenue shooting

A Hagerstown man is facing multiple charges including first-degree attempted murder after guns were fired numerous times near Maryland Avenue on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Numerous witnesses in the neighborhood heard the gunfire and surveillance video from a Head Start of Washington County location on Spruce Street showed a male running between vehicles in the Krumpe's Do-Nuts parking area, according to court records.

The video also showed what appeared to be projectiles hitting vehicles.

Police responded to the area of Maryland Avenue and West First Street about 3:50 p.m. Wednesday for a report of multiple shots fired, according to the release. When they arrived, police found about 47 shell casings around Maryland Avenue and Howard Street and discovered that two structures and five vehicles were hit.

A witness told police that the incident occurred when a gray car arrived at a house on Maryland Avenue and someone in the car began shooting toward the house. Several males came out of house and fired at the shooter as they chased him, the witness said.

What did police see when they got there?

Police said they saw four people standing outside the house when they arrived. They later searched the home and found an extended magazine for a 9 mm handgun and another extended magazine for a handgun, as well as other firearms-related items.

Two males at the scene, including Rivera, were detained at the scene and taken to the Hagerstown Police Department headquarters for questioning.

Rivera told police he lives at the Maryland Avenue house where the incident occurred. Rivera said he ran out of the house when he heard gunfire but couldn't remember anything else. Police said among the video surveillance they collected was a piece that shows Rivera being among a group of males shooting at an individual.
