‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ Scares Away the Streaming Competition | Chart

Universal Pictures’ “Five Nights at Freddy’s” has taken the video game franchise of the same name to new heights, as the film broke records with the largest first-day opening at the box office for a film with a simultaneous streaming release. Not only that, the supernatural horror film gave Peacock its biggest opening to date and surpassed “Halloween” to become Blumhouse’s best opening of all time.

The film stars Josh Hutcherson as a security guard tasked with the night shift at an abandoned family entertainment center who quickly discovers the resident animatronics come to life, driven by murderous intent. While it received decisively negative reviews from critics, audience reception was more favorable, particularly exciting the franchise’s dedicated fanbase.

To no one’s surprise, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is the #1 most-streamed film for the weekend of Nov. 3-5 on Whip Media’s Movie Ranker, which uses viewership data from its consumer app, TV Time, which has over 28 million registered users globally.

Following its successful theatrical run, “A Haunting in Venice” is continuing to attract viewers, this time on Hulu, taking the No. 2 spot. The supernatural thriller is a sequel to “Death on the Nile” and also based on the famous mystery novels written by Agatha Christie. As the third film in the series, it features the return of the character of detective Hercule Poirot, reprised by Kenneth Branagh, who effectively links the otherwise independent storylines. If the series’ continued theatrical success is any indication, we should expect to see Poirot take on a new murder case again soon.

Falling from its No. 2 spot last week, Sony Pictures’ “Love at First Sight” comes in at No. 3 on this weekend’s ranker, continuing to attract viewers on Netflix.

Entering the ranker at No. 4 was “Quiz Lady,” a comedy that had a direct-to-streaming release on Hulu on Nov. 3rd. The film stars Sandra Oh and Awkwafina as sisters who must work together to pay off their mother’s gambling debts by any means necessary, which includes Awkwafina’s character becoming a game show champion.

After surpassing the box office for “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” in its first 12 days, the sequel “Across the Spider-Verse” went on to gross a whopping $690 million. Making its streaming debut on Netflix, the web-slinging sequel enters the ranking as No. 5 this week.

Other titles that appeared on last week’s ranker including “Pain Hustlers,” “The Nun II,” and “Old Dads” have all fallen several positions in the rankings.

Rounding out the most popular new streaming movies this week is “Insidious: The Red Door” at No. 10. The horror sequel debuted on Netflix on Nov. 4th. The fifth film in the “Insidious” franchise leaves the door open for a sixth installment in the series, a spin-off that is currently in pre-production titled “Thread: An Insidious Tale.”
