Fisherman gets yanked overboard on 'Deadliest Catch'

Season 14 of Deadliest Catch has been hard on the fishermen. But the scariest moment so far came when Summer Bay greenhorn Spencer Moore was pulled overboard.

A supermoon created record tides, which resulted in extremely fast currents — so fast that much of the fleet shut down because the boats couldn’t safely pull up pots. Unfortunately for Moore, the Summer Bay waited a little too long to call it quits.

While he was trying to attach a pot to the block, the current yanked Moore over the railing. Fortunately he was able to hold onto the buoy to stay afloat in the 34-degree water. The quick-thinking crew threw him a life ring, which he managed to reach so they could pull him aboard.

After he had collected his thoughts, Moore recounted what happened: “I was trying to get the bag in the block, and it’s just ripping hard, and I held on, and it ripped me over way faster than I could let go.”

For Captain Wild Bill Wichrowski, this was the first time a member of his crew had gone over the rail. And while the incident left him visibly shaken, he couldn’t have been more pleased with the outcome. “I love you guys even more than you’ll ever know,” he told his crew. Fighting back tears, he joked, “There’s no crying in crab fishing.”

Deadliest Catch airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on Discovery.
