Jodie Comer and Adam Driver's new movie The Last Duel has released its first epic trailer, which gives us an initial look at the dramatic and brutal titular duel.

Set in 14th century France, historical thriller The Last Duel, which comes from Alien and Gladiator director Ridley Scott, stars Killing Eve actress Comer as Marguerite de Carrouges, a "good wife" to her husband, knight Jean de Carrouges (Bourne star Matt Damon).

The trailer sees Marguerite encounter squire Jacques LeGris (Star Wars actor Driver) before an incident appears to occur between them.

Marguerite later tells her husband that Jacques forcibly entered their home and attacked her, before Count Pierre d'Alençon (Justice League's Ben Affleck) informs Jacques that "an unspeakable charge" has been brought against him – something which Jacques denies.

With the matter needing to be settled, Jean and Jacques agree to duel each other to the death, despite the fact that Jean is warned that if he loses it would have "dire consequences" for his wife.

Marguerite continues to assert that she is telling the truth and announces that she will not be silent – even after she is told that she could face being burned alive if her husband loses the fight.

The Last Duel also stars Killing Eve actress Harriet Walter, Merlin's Nathaniel Parker and Peaky Blinders actor Sam Hazeldine.

The movie's script has been written by Damon and Affleck, whose previous writing team-up on Good Will Hunting won them an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 1998, with Nicole Holofcener also writing The Last Duel.

The story is based on Eric Jager's 2004 book The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial by Combat in Medieval France, which outlines the real-life events of the last officially recognised judicial duel fought in France.

Affleck admitted last year that he was "a little nervous" about making The Last Duel, because he had "never done Medieval" before.

"It was a real pleasure working with Matt and Nicole Holofcener, who wrote the script with us. [Matt and I] kept saying, 'Why have we not done this more often?' We just got lucky that our schedules kind of intersected so that we had some free time to share," he added.

The Last Duel is due for release in UK and US cinemas on October 15.
