First Photos for Netflix’s Wrestling Comedy ‘GLOW’ Are All About the Spandex

Netflix released the first images from its upcoming wrestling comedy show “GLOW” and if they’re any indication, we’re going to be having some serious 1980s flashbacks.

The show stars Alison Brie (“Community”) as Ruth Wilder, a struggling actress in Los Angeles who finds one last chance at stardom in women’s wrestling.

Wilder will be teaming up with 12 “Hollywood misfits,” as Netflix describes them, including Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin), a soap opera actress who gets sucked back into show business after having a baby. Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron) is a B-movie director who must lead the women on their journey.

“GLOW” is created by Carly Mensch (“Orange is the New Black”) and Liz Flahive (“Homeland”). Both, who are serving as showrunners, also worked on Showtime’s “Nurse Jackie.” Jenji Kohan (“Orange is the New Black”) and Tara Herrmann are executive producers.

While the story depicted in the Netflix series is fiction, the premise is based on a real-life wrestling circuit and series in the late 1980s called “Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling” or “G.L.O.W.” It was similar to the WWF, but differed in how it actually had separate seasons with a set number of episodes, along with moving storylines. “G.L.O.W.” only lasted four seasons.

“GLOW” premieres Friday, June 23 on Netflix. Check out more photos below.
