The Orland Art Center Gallery is presenting “Music and Words” for its First Friday of the Month event on March 1, featuring a live performance by musician Jim Scribner.

Listening to Big Band era masters like Benny Goodman and the cool jazz of Thelonius Monk, and other artists ranging from John Denver to John Mellencamp, Scribner, an educator as well as a musician, learned to appreciate a rich variety of music.

He played clarinet and tenor saxophone in both symphonic and jazz orchestras, then added the guitar to his instrument list.

Intrigued by the words as much as the music, and the ability of both to touch emotions, Scribner includes his poetry in his performances.

The Orland Art Center Gallery invites the community to join in a celebration of music while listening to Scribner perform on his guitar and the rhythm of his words at 7 p.m., Friday, March 1, at 732 Fourth St., Orland.

Currently featured at the gallery is the art show “People, Place and Promises,” which runs through March 23, Tuesdays through Saturdays, 12-5 p.m.
