First ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Trailer Declares the Antihero Is “Marvel Jesus”

Deadpool is going to need a little help from his friends to survive the multiverse. The Super Bowl trailer revealed the first footage and a new title for Deadpool 3, which is officially called Deadpool & Wolverine.

The trailer also confirmed rumors that the Time Variance Authority, the multi-verse hopping organization at the center of Disney+’s Loki, will play a key role in the film, which introduces Ryan Reynolds’ antihero to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The trailer begins at a birthday party for Wade Wilson (AKA Deadpool) that is interrupted by agents from the TVA, who take him back to headquarters and enlist him on a mission. He is shown images from Marvel Studios history, including Captain America, Iron Man and Thor.

“Your little Cinematic Universe is about to change forever. I’m the Messiah. I am Marvel Jesus,” says Deadpool, who earlier in the trailer namechecked Marvel owner Disney while making a joke with innuendo.

Deadpool 3 marks a number of first for Marvel Studios. It will be its first R-rated movie. It will also be its first movie to star a character that originally appeared in movies made by 20th Century Fox, the studio that owned the rights to characters such as X-Men and the Fantastic Four before Disney acquired it in 2019. And though Hugh Jackman launched the modern superhero age with 2000’s X-Men, this also marks the first MCU movie to feature the actor, who comes out of retirement as Wolverine for the film.

Marvel has a lot riding on Deadpool 3. The studio faced multiple box office setbacks last year, with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania underperforming and The Marvels bombing. (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was a hit and remains a bright spot.) The studio has just one title in theaters this year and hopes it can be a palette cleanser audiences need to return to theaters to see MCU movies.

The Deadpool films, released in 2016 and 2018, were big hits for Fox and, despite having more modest budgets than other X-Men films, stand as the highest grossing in the series. This time around, Reynolds is joined by Emma Corrin and Matthew Macfadyen.

The Super Bowl is the prime launching pad for movie studios, with 30 seconds going for $7 million during the broadcast. This year’s game, between the Kansas City Chiefs and The San Francisco 49ers has the added interest because music superstar Taylor Swift will be in attendance, supporting boyfriend Travis Kelce, the star tight end of the Chiefs.

Deadpool 3 arrives in theaters July 26.
