Firefighters said fireworks may have sparked an early morning brush fire near Ranchero Middle School in Hesperia.

San Bernardino County Fire officials reported the fire at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday in an area off El Cajon Lane located south of Ranchero Road.

The area is yards west of the entrance to the new 15,633-home Silverwood master-community project, which broke ground in March.

The homes, built in phases, will be situated between Ranchero Road and Highway 173 in the Summit Valley area of Hesperia.

The fire burned nearly 5 acres of brush in an existing housing tract. Residents reported hearing fireworks in the area before the fire.

The Apple Valley Fire Protection District and CAL Fire assisted in battling the blaze, which was contained in just over three hours.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, fire officials said.
