The first Independence Day celebration in July 1777 was practically synonymous with fireworks in honoring the 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence, according to brittanica.com.
Americans continue to commemorate the rich history of the United States through fireworks every Fourth of July, and central Illinois will be a part of those festivities.
Are fireworks legal in Illinois?: What to know about Fourth of July, how you can celebrate
Why do Americans celebrate 4th of July with fireworks?
According to brittanica.com, many people refer to a letter from John Adams to his wife, Abigail, informing her of the country's independence that read like this:
"[This day] ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more."
With the observance taking place in the middle of the Revolutionary War, the website points out that fireworks likely wouldn't have been the first option.
So, why were fireworks the celebratory item of choice for Independence Day?
The celebratory display of fireworks we know today evolved out of the use of fireworks in romantic performances of combat and in elaborate pageants and plays, typically associated with national events. … Thus, by the time of the American Revolution, spectacular displays of fireworks had already become a popular way to celebrate national prosperity and patriotism.
