The fire that damaged a significant portion of Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill’s home on Wednesday was caused by a child playing with a cigarette lighter, local fire officials confirmed to PEOPLE.

Davie Fire Marshal Robert Taylor says Thursday that the fire was started by a child playing with a cigarette lighter in one of the bedrooms of the $6.9 million mansion. The news was first reported by the Associated Press and local NBC 6 Miami, which had broadcast live news footage of the fire department’s response on Wednesday afternoon.

“It was an accidental fire,” Taylor told the AP.

No one was injured in the blaze, the fire department and Hill’s agent Drew Rosenhaus said.

Rosenhaus told reporters outside the Southwest Ranches, Fla., home that Hill and his family “are safe,” according to the outlet.

“No one was injured No. 1, no pets, so for that, we’re very grateful,” Rosenhaus said. “We’re very grateful to the firefighters that put the fire out. Thankfully, the fire was contained to a limited area in the home. Obviously, there’ll be some smoke and water damage. It’s very difficult for anybody obviously to have your home catch on fire, but Tyreek was handling it, he and his family, with as much poise as you could hope.”

Hill, 29, was at Dolphins practice when the fire began. He abruptly left after getting the news.

Later, NBC Miami’s live helicopter footage showed Hill and his wife Keeta Vaccaro standing outside the home, holding hands and looking on as firefighters battled the flames. At another point after the flames appeared to be extinguished, the wide receiver could be seen holding an orange cat in his hands as he and Vaccaro looked on from the street out front.

The 9,300-square-foot property includes two guest houses, seven total bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a home theater, a large basketball court and putting green, as well as a large indoor pool, according to the local station.

Hill bought the home soon after he was traded to the Dolphins by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2022, according to the AP, which reports several bedrooms, a den, and an in-home movie theater were located on the home’s upper level where the fire appeared to be centered.

News footage showed that firefighters had cut a hole in the roof overtop of the main structure of the property, where an extended firefighter’s ladder led. After the fire seemed to be put out, firefighters could be seen walking around the property and examining numerous balconies with charred French doors while Hill and Vaccaro remained out front.

"We’re here for him,” Dolphins cornerback Kader Kohou told reporters gathered around his locker on Wednesday, according to video shared by Sun Sentinel reporter David Furones.

Several of Hill’s teammates, including Kohou, didn’t realize the extent of the emergency until after practice. A reporter showed Kohou video of the house on fire from his phone. “Damn,” Kohou reacted, adding, “That is crazy. I didn’t know it was that bad.”

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa told reporters “the main thing is his family is safe, his loved ones are good and he’s good as well,” according to a video of the Dolphins press conference shared by NFL reporter Adam Beasley.

“I know it’s a little cliche to say, but those things like that, you know, part of the house, some of those things can be replaceable but I’m just glad a lot of his family members are safe,” Tagovailoa added.

Hill currently leads the NFL with 1,717 receiving yards. The Dolphins have qualified for the NFL Playoffs, but are looking to seal their first AFC East title since 2008 with a win on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.
