Blaze leaves Hampton pizza eatery charred, 4 other businesses affected in Buckroe Shopping Center

A 2-alarm commercial fire left a pizza eatery charred and affected four surrounding businesses in Hampton’s Buckroe Shopping Center on Wednesday afternoon.

According to dispatchers, Hampton fire crews were dispatched around 4:10 to the blaze at 1979 E. Pembroke Avenue — the address for Anna’s Pizza.

“Anna’s” was all that remained of the local restaurant’s front signage. The roof, which should be stretched from the pizza place to the neighboring Chinese restaurant, instead sagged between the scorched remains of the two businesses.

The surrounding businesses affected by the blaze include the Matenna Deluxe Hair Salon located two doors down from Anna’s Pizza. The store’s owner was on her last appointment of the day when she noticed people outside running toward the parking lot. The owner of a neighboring nail salon urged Matenna and her client to leave the building.

“When we ran out, I looked up and there was heavy smoke over us,” said Matenna, who preferred to only give her first name. “The smoke was getting heavier and heavier. And next thing you know, there was an explosion of fire from Anna’s.”

The heat from the blaze, Matenna said, could be felt from 20-30 feet away. Her and her client ended up sitting in her car for around two hours, watching fire crews fight the flames, which bordered Anna’s Pizza and Hunan Garden.

The fire has since been extinguished, according to a 6:20 p.m. update from the Hampton Fire Department. No one was injured in the blaze.

While Matenna’s business was not involved in the blaze, it was damaged by smoke and water. At this time, she is not allowed into her salon and has no idea when she will be able to reopen. Matenna spent the rest of her afternoon calling to cancel clients who had scheduled appointments with her later this week.

“There is no telling what is awaiting us,” Matenna said.

Business hours for Anna’s Pizza were changed to reflect that the businesses are “temporarily closed” on their Google webpages in the hours after the fire. A representative of Anna’s Pizza declined to comment. Other surrounding business owners could not be reached.
