“General Hospital” star Finola Hughes admitted to Soap Opera Digest that she’s “notoriously bad about putting together a reel” for Daytime Emmy consideration. But with help from a producer she entered scenes from “a few months ago where I accidentally shot a 15-year-old because it was Halloween and I didn’t recognize them, and that storyline hit Anna hard because she’s law enforcement and that’s the last thing you want to be doing.” Will that finally win her her second Emmy after a long, long wait?

Hughes is loved by the television academy, having now been nominated 11 times for her work in daytime. She has especially been on a roll lately, picking up seven nominations in the past 10 years. But she hasn’t won any of those. In fact, her only Emmy for playing Anna Devane on the ABC serial came in 1991. So it has been 33 years since her last victory. But it’s not just her. “GH” has struggled in general in the Best Actress race. Despite having a record 16 wins for Best Drama Series, the show has only claimed the lead actress award three times, for Hughes, Laura Wright (2011) and Maura West (2015). None have won multiple Best Actress trophies for the show, though West also had two previous victories for “As the World Turns.”

This year “GH” has two chances at the title. Hughes is nominated alongside her co-star Cynthia Watros, who is nominated for the second time for this series and for the third time overall; she previously won Best Actress for “Guiding Light” back in 1998. According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users as of this writing, one of them is likely to prevail. Watros is the favorite with leading odds of 17/5, and Hughes is next in line with odds of 4/1. Do you agree with our forecasts? And what do you think of Hughes’s choice of scene submissions?
