Here’s a new sensation: Emmy nominee Jenna Ortega playing a potentially duplicitous femme fatale in a thriller from “L.A. Confidential” writer and Oscar winner Brian Helgeland.

The new film is called “Finestkind,” and while it stars the “Scream” and “Wednesday” breakout, the focus is on two brothers, played by Ben Foster and Toby Wallace. Here’s the logline, from Paramount+, which is debuting “Finestkind” later this year.

More from GoldDerby

FINESTKIND tells the story of two brothers (Foster and Wallace), raised in different worlds, who are reunited as adults over a fateful summer. Set against the backdrop of commercial fishing, the story takes on primal stakes when desperate circumstances force the brothers to strike a deal with a violent Boston crime gang. Along the way, a young woman (Ortega) finds herself caught perilously in the middle. Sacrifices must be made, and bonds between brothers, friends, lovers, and a father (Tommy Lee Jones) and his son are put to the ultimate test.

“Finestkind” debuted at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. In interviews conducted at the event, Helgeland said this was a story he had long wanted to tell. The acclaimed writer – who was also an Oscar nominee for “Mystic River” – grew up in Bedford, Massachusetts where the film is set and based many of its characters on people he knew at the time. (Charlie, played by Wallace, is a stand-in for Helgeland.) The project – 30 years in the making according to Helgeland – could have wound up with numerous other cast permutations, including Heath Ledger as Tom (played now by Foster) were the movie made in the 2000s before Ledger’s death, and Jake Gyllenhaal and Zendaya in roles now played by Foster again and Ortega.

“Finestkind” will debut on Parmaount+ in December. The trailer can be seen below.
