Fine Arts Association presents solo recital from Union professor

Nov. 9—BARBOURVILLE — Dr. Yukiko Fujimura, Union College Assistant Professor of Music and Kentucky Music Teachers Association President-Elect, will perform a classical piano recital this Sunday at 3 p.m. in the college's Conway-Boatman Memorial Chapel.

A native of Kanagawa, Japan, Fujimura actively plays recitals of solo and chamber music, as well as concerti with orchestra.

The recipient of numerous awards and honors, she was named prize winner of the Yokosuka International Piano Competition in Japan, the Music Teachers National Association Young Artist Performance competition in Wisconsin, Schubert Club Competition, Ball State University Graduate Concerto Competition, and Stanislaw Moniuszko International Competition in Lithuania.

Fujimura holds a doctorate in piano performance from Ball State University. During her academic career, Fujimura recorded Samuel Barber's Complete Works for Solo Piano, which became the first complete recording to include the composer's recently published early works. Formerly, she studied at the School of Music at Kitakamakura Joshi Gakuen Junior and Senior High School in Japan. At age 14, she spent the summer studying with Noel Flores at the University of Music in Vienna. She has also received guidance from some of the world's most prominent pianists Dina Yoffe, Pavel Gililov, and Ian Hobson.

Prior to her tenure at Union, Fujimura has previously served on the faculties of Joliet Junior College and Concordia University Chicago. Her students have won top prizes in state and regional competitions and examinations. Her innovative approach to piano pedagogy has garnered invitations to present at national and international conferences including the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) and the International Society for Music Educators (ISME).

Sunday's recital is being presented by the Fine Arts Association of Southeastern Kentucky. Tickets are $10 at the door.
