‘Finding Dory’ Swims Past ‘Game of Thrones’ to Top of Disc Sales Charts
Walt Disney Studios topped both national home video sales charts the week ending Nov. 20 with “Finding Dory,” the animated sequel/spinoff to 2003’s “Finding Nemo.”
Bowing at a distant No. 2 was the sixth season of the hot HBO TV Series “Game of Thrones,” which according to NPD research sold 12.3% as many units as “Dory.”
The two new releases pushed Paramount’s “Star Trek Beyond” to the No. 3 spot on both charts from No. 2 the previous week.
Sony Pictures’ quirky “Sausage Party,” the top seller in the previous week, slipped to No. 4 on the NPD VideoScan overall disc sales chart, which tracks combined Blu-ray Disc and DVD sales, and No. 5 on the Blu-ray Disc-only sales chart.
Buoyed by the release of a premium 3D edition, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” vaulted back up the charts, ending the week at No. 6 on the overall disc sales chart and No. 4 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart.
Universal Pictures’ “Bad Moms” rounded out the top five on the overall disc sales chart, down from No. 3 the prior week.
According to NPD data, “Finding Dory” generated 70% of its total unit sales from Blu-ray Disc, while “Game of Thrones” generated 55% of its total unit sales from the high-definition version.
On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart, 20th Century Fox’s “Independence Day: Resurgence” soared to No. 1 now that its 28-day holdback from Redbox is over.
The previous week’s top rental, Warner’s “The Legend of Tarzan,” slid to No. 2, while “Central Intelligence,” also from Warner, held steady at No. 3
Rounding out the top five on Home Media Magazine’s rental chart were 20th Century Fox’s “Ice Age: Collision Course” at No. 4 and, debuting at No. 5, Sony Pictures’ “Sausage Party.”
