Five of the remaining contenders are from the Disney family; 'Kubo and the Two Strings' could be first animated film to get a nomination in this category since 1993
Walt Disney Feature Animation’s Zootopia leads the feature nominees for the 44th annual Annie Awards with 11 nominations, followed by Laika’s Kubo and the Two Strings with 10 noms. But the full list of nominations for the International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood’s annual awards competition also underscored the strength of several indie films in this year’s awards race.
It took a few tries to get up and running — it’s all part of the fun and unpredictability of transmitting live — but we took to Facebook Live today for a sit-down with the voice stars of Kubo and the Two Strings, Charlize Theron and Matthew McConaughey (watch above). The film comes to us from the stop-motion animation maestros at Laika, the studio behind Coraline, ParaNorman, and The Boxtrolls. It was the pedigree of those films, particularly Coraline, that lured these two Oscar winners to lend their voices.
