The results have lifted Minion-powered franchise past "Shrek" series to become highest-grossing animated film franchise of all time globally.
'Dunkirk' isn't the only win of the weekend as Universal's femme-centric 'Girls Trip' breaks the R-rated comedy curse, opening to $30.4 million. Meanwhile, 'Wonder Woman' passes 'Guardians 2' to become summer's biggest hit.
Still, 'Apes' is the latest franchise title to come in behind the last installment as Hollywood battles sequel fatigue; elsewhere, 'Wish Upon' gets lost, while 'The Big Sick' places No. 5 in its nationwide expansion.
Edgar Wright's 'Baby Driver' continued to impress with $39 million in a week, while Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler's comedy 'The House' is further demolished
The 'Despicable Me' entry came in notably behind expectations in a surprise twist, while 'Baby Driver' is proving a powerful antidote to summer popcorn fare with a $30 million launch; 'The House' is one of the worst openings of Will Ferrell's career.

Pharrell Williams is one of the most talented, one of the most successful, and one of the most groundbreaking recording artists in music today. The songs Pharrell has penned for the Minionverse include the ubiquitous 2013 smash hit “Happy” from the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack, and the five new tracks he lined up for the new threequel (include the singles “Yellow Light” and “There’s Something”). Just because “Happy” became a sensation three years ago inspiring countless imitations all over the globe, doesn’t mean Pharrell felt any pressure when it came to his next act.
Despicable Me 3 marks the fourth time Steve Carell has channeled the rehabilitated supervillain Gru (including a cameo in Minions), so it stands to reason that the follicly challenged character’s distinctive growl could follow the actor home. Carell admitted to Yahoo Movies at the film’s Los Angeles press day that, in his downtime, he has occasionally channeled Gru, who in the new threequel is revealed to hail from Hollywood’s favorite fictional nation, Freedonia. “It did come in handy when my kids were younger and their friends were over,” said Carell, who was joined by co-star Kristen Wiig (watch above).

New 'Despicable Me 3' trailer focuses on reunion of reformed villain Gru and his bad-boy twin brother Dru, and the mischief made by now-imprisoned minions
The Despicable Me franchise has become an animated-movie juggernaut, with 2010’s original grossing $251 million, its 2013 sequel tallying $368 million, and its 2015 spinoff, Minions, raking in $336 million. Unemployed and at his wit’s end, former evil mastermind Gru (Steve Carell) finds his life turned upside down by the revelation that he has an identical twin brother named Dru (also Carell), who — aside from his flowing blond locks, cheery demeanor, and fabulous wealth — shares with Gru both a face and a desire to commit crime. With a supporting voice cast that includes Kristen Wiig, Trey Parker, Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, Steve Coogan, Julie Andrews, and Jenny Slate, Despicable Me 3 should be one of the summer’s big family hits when it debuts on June 30.

Universal’s presentation at CinemaCon committed a significant amount of time to the studio’s Illumination Entertainment projects, announcing that Benedict Cumberbatch will star in the new animated How the Grinch Stole Christmas film, which hits theaters on Nov. 10, 2017. Illumination Entertainment CEO Chris Meledandri also announced that South Park co-creator Trey Parker, who has not done voice work in anything other his own projects, will voice the new villain in Despicable Me 3. The character, called Balthazar Bratt, is a former child star who is obsessed with the character he played in the ’80s.
