Film News Roundup: ‘It’ Exec Producer Jon Silk Signs With Legendary
In today’s film news roundup, “It” exec producer Jon Silk signs with Legendary, “Boys Don’t Cry” director Kimberly Peirce has a new movie project, and Industry Entertainment has a first-look with Bold Films.
EXECUTIVE HIRE
Legendary Entertainment has hired “It” executive producer Jon Silk as executive vice president of production.
Silk will join Legendary’s film division alongside Alex Garcia and Cale Boyter, who will also serve as exec VPs of production as well as Ali Mendes, who is VP of production and creative executive Jay Ashenfelter. He will report to Mary Parent, vice chairman of worldwide production.
Silk was Jeff Robinov’s initial creative hire at Studio 8 and served as exec VP and worked on “Nosferatu” and “White Boy Rick.” Silk also spent six years at the Warner Bros.-based Lin Pictures, where he focused on identifying properties with franchise potential including the recent film adaptation of Stephen King’s “It.”
Legendary currently has four films in various phases of production including “Pacific Rim Uprising,” “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” “Skyscraper,” and “Detective Pikachu.”
DIRECTOR ATTACHMENT
“Boys Don’t Cry” director Kimberly Peirce is attached to direct Amazon’s historical drama “This Is Jane,” set up at John Lesher’s Le Grisbi Productions.
The project is based on Laura Kaplan’s book “The Story of Jane: The Legendary Underground Feminist Abortion Service,” which follows women who provided abortion services in the years before 1973’s Roe V. Wade Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion. Kaplan, who joined the organization of Jane in 1971, has assembled the histories of the anonymous women who are identified only by pseudonyms.
Dan Loflin has written the adaptation. Peirce’s feature directing credits include “Stop-Loss” and 2013’s remake of “Carrie.” She is repped by Verve, Writ Large, and law firm Jackoway Tyerman Wertheimer Austen Mandelbaum Morris & Klein.
FIRST-LOOK DEAL
Bold Films has signed management-production company Industry Entertainment to develop more feature films.
It’s the third deal Bold has signed in recent years, following similar agreements with Ben Stiller’s Red Hour and Jake Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories. Industry has more than 25 managers and offices in Los Angeles and New York.
Bold Films executives Lisa Zambri and Jon Oakes will oversee the pact and work to develop and produce films alongside Industry talent.
“Not many financiers can boast a track record like ‘Drive,’ ‘Whiplash,’ ‘Nightcrawler,’ and their current release ‘Stronger,'” Industry said in a statement. “Michel Litvak, Gary Michael Walters, and their team are the best partners one could hope for; they’re dedicated to making great films and we hope we can add to their legacy.”
