Film Independent Spirit Awards Nominations: Best Feature ‘American Fiction’, ‘May December’, ‘All Of Us Strangers’, ‘Passages’, ‘Past Lives’ & ‘We Grown Now’

In what is an annual tradition, A24 led all nominations at this morning’s 39th Film Independent Spirit Awards nominations with 11, while the indie studio’s Past Lives, along with Netflix’s May December and Amazon MGM’s American Fiction, each tallied five noms apiece.

The titles up for the Spirits’ marquee Best Feature include Amazon MGM’s American Fiction, Searchlight’s All of Us Strangers, A24’s Past Lives, Netflix’s May December, Sony Pictures Classics’ We Grown Now and Mubi’s Passages.

As of this post, three movies have yet to open: We Grown Now, American Fiction (which goes limited on December 15) and All of Us Strangers (December 22). Passages played the arthouse circuit over the summer, grossing around $551,000. May December is available to stream on Netflix, while Past Lives has made close to $11 million stateside and more than $20M worldwide, a very good gross for a specialty release in the post-pandemic marketplace.

American Fiction world premiered at the Toronto Film Festival where it won the Oscar Best Picture bellwether the People’s Choice Award. We Grown Now also made its world premiere at TIFF. Netflix acquired Todd Haynes’ May December out of Cannes for $11M. All of Us Strangers made its world splash at Telluride, while Past Lives world premiered at Sundance in January.

Some films aren’t eligible due to the budget qualifications for pics, that figure being anything below $30M after tax incentives. That leaves out the most buzzed about movie this awards season: Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things from Searchlight, which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and which is opening this weekend. A few Netflix movies also didn’t make the cut here including Maestro, Society of the Snow, Rustin, Nyad, The Killer and They Cloned Tyrone.

Earlier this year, A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once came up big at the Spirits with seven wins including Best Feature, Best Director (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) Best Screenplay (the Daniels), Best Editing, Best Lead Performance (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Performance (Ke Huy Quan) and Best Breakthrough Performance (Stephanie Hsu). While the Spirits, which use to take place the Saturday afternoon before Oscar Sunday, remained an indicator as to what would win Best Picture, that track record fell away for a few years as the org recognized deeper-cut indie movies.

This year marked the first time in quite some time the Spirits mirrored what would ultimately win Best Picture at the Oscars. Perhaps that will be true again this year with American Fiction, which is gaining significant traction.

Other distributors with the most noms today include Netflix (10), Amazon MGM (7), Mubi (7), IFC (7), Focus Features (6), Amazon (6), Searchlight (6), Showtime (5) and Apple TV+ (5).

New to the television categories is Best Breakthrough Performance in a New Scripted Series, honoring actors who made themselves known through noteworthy character portrayals. The nominees include Clark Backo for The Changeling, Aria Mia Loberti for All the Light We Cannot See, Adjani Salmon for Dreaming Whilst Black, Keivonn Montreal Woodard for The Last of Us, and Kara Young for I’m a Virgo.

The 2024 Spirts will also pay tribute to the 30^th anniversary of Film Independent’s Artist Development program, which supports creative voices and diverse perspectives in film and television by giving filmmakers the resources they need to advance their projects and build sustainable careers. Artists who have received support from the program include Elegance Bratton (The Inspector), Siân Heder (CODA), Justin Simien (Dear White People), Lulu Wang (The Farewell) and Chloé Zhao (Nomadland).

This year the Spirit Awards Film Nominating Committees selected nominees from 27 different countries with budget ranges between $10,000-$28 million, applying the following guidelines in determining nominees: uniqueness of vision, original and provocative subject matter and economy of means. Of all nominated writers, directors, producers and technical artists, 40% are women and 32% are BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color). Among the nominated performers, 49% are women and 40% are BIPOC. And of all 2024 nominees, 42% are women and 34% are BIPOC.

The committees are comprised of writers, directors, producers, cinematographers, editors, actors, critics, casting directors, film festival programmers and other working film professionals. This year, they are 56% female, 3% nonbinary, 3% transgender, and 49% BIPOC; 29% identify as LGBTQ+ and 3% identify as people with disabilities.

The 39th Spirit Awards will be held on Sunday, February 25, 2024 on the beach in Santa Monica hosted by Saturday Night Live alum Aidy Bryant. The awards will be streamed live on the IMDb and Film Independent YouTube channels, and across other social platforms.

For a second year in a row, the Spirits acting categories are no longer separated out by gender, hence all genders compete under the three slots of Lead Performance, Supporting Performance and Breakthrough Performance.
