Fill up on chili and sweets at the Young Leaders cook-off while supporting the dog shelter

Head to the Pritchard Laughlin Civic Center on Thursday and warm up with a bowl or three of chili. The Young Leaders of Guernsey County will host this fundraiser, offering you the chance to judge some of the best crockpot creations and baked goods around. Tickets are $10 and benefits the Guernsey County Dog Shelter. Each attendee gets three votes, two votes for food and one for the best-dressed table. Additional tickets to vote with can be purchased on-site. There will be a 50/50 raffle, cash bar, and more. The event is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by visiting the Cambridge Area Chamber of Commerce website. For more information call 740-439-6688. Dickens opening ceremonies

It's that glorious time of year when the downtown streets of Cambridge are transformed into a magical Dickens wonderland. Wheeling Avenue will be abuzz with activities all day Saturday. The Akron bagpipe band will be at the Dickens Welcome Center from 2 to 4 p.m., the Cambridge Singers will be at Black Cat Antiques from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and the list goes on. A special visit from Her Majesty Queen Victoria at the courthouse will mark the official start of the Cambridge holiday season. Music from Chordial Chorus and a candle-lighting ceremony will follow, as well as a reception at the library after the opening ceremony. It's that time of year when craft fairs and markets stop popping up. Get a jump start on the Thanksgiving season and enjoy some locally made Guernsey County beer at the Guernsey Brewhouse on Saturday and Sunday. The autumn-themed event will host a variety of vendors, selling clothing, wreaths, woodcrafts, jewelry, and even salsa. If you get hungry The Hibachi Hut will be serving food on Saturday, while Oma's #1 Food has you covered on Sunday. A caricaturist will be on-site, and live music is scheduled. Haley Bundy will be bringing her light, melodic voice to Georgetown Vineyards this week. The Cambridge native has been performing for years in Guernsey County and surrounding areas. 'The Case of the Candy Cane Codicil'

If you missed the chance to snag tickets for the Sherlock mystery weekend, fear not, my dear reader. Head to the Pritchard Laughlin Civic Center and view the play, "The Case of the Candy Cane Codicil" presented in its entirety from Nov. 10 to 12. Showtimes are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. Join the lively cast and follow along to find out who killed the CEO of Cane's Candy Canes in this fun, holiday show. This is the eighth original work by local author and playwright Anne Chlovechok. Tickets for the show are $10 and can be purchased at the door or by calling 740-439-7009.
