Fewer than 6,000 in Southern Tier without power: See updates here

As of 3:30 p.m. Friday, NYSEG reported about 5,500 customers were still without power in the Southern Tier.

  • Broome: 1,889

  • Chenango: 3,299

  • Delaware: 354

  • Tioga: 30

NYSEG spokesperson Julio Saenz said the number of power outages is lower as nearly 2,800 crews continue the goal of restoring electricity to 95% of the area by 11 p.m. Friday.

“In the Binghamton Division, which includes Broome, Chenango and Tioga, right now, there are 4,640 outages,” Saenz said Friday morning.

The number of customers without power in the Southern Tier has decreased from nearly 100,000 as a result of Monday’s nor’easter that continued through Tuesday, dropping a foot of snow or more in some areas.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar called the spring snowstorm that knocked down trees and wires the worst storm in Broome County history in terms of power outages.

Saenz said in Broome, Chenango and Tioga counties, there were 1,160 down wires and 90 broken poles as result of the spring snowstorm.

“Just to give you an idea, a broken pole takes about 6-8 hours to replace,” Saenz said. “That’s just an idea on the damage.”

Broome County lifted its state of emergency and travel advisory at noon Friday.

All roads have been made safe, but the county said drivers should continue using caution as some debris remains near roadways and crews will continue work on finishing cleanup over the next week.

Also, 40,000 pounds of dry ice and 63 pallets of bottled water were delivered to distribution points this week; supplies are still available at the following eight locations and residents should contact their closest distribution point for pickup times.
