Festivals attract art, music lovers

Art and music lovers set out on a steamy Saturday last weekend to check out the 19th Art of Sound festival which included Arts on the Square and the first ever Flea Fest.

The simultaneous festivals included a lineup of musical performances, artists displaying their works and a gathering of ukulele players participating in workshops and a concert with local music group, the Dancing Fleas.

"It went really great," said Violet Arth, marketing director for the Cleveland County Arts Council. "Flea Fest was a huge hit. It was very well attended by ukulele enthusiasts from multiple states."

The hours-long gatherings were a result of a partnership with the Cleveland County Arts Council and Buffalo Creek Gallery in Uptown Shelby.

As of Monday there was not an official number for how many people attended, but Arth estimated that there were 300 to 400 people at the event at any given time of the day.
