Will Ferrell to Star in and Produce ‘The Legend of Cocaine Island’ Based on Netflix Documentary
Will Ferrell is set to star in and produce a feature film at Netflix based on the streamer’s own documentary, “The Legend of Cocaine Island,” an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
The documentary, which is directed by Theo Love, made its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2018 under the title “White Tide: The Legend of Culebra” and aired on Netflix in March.
The documentary is pegged as a Southern fairy tale about the life of Rodney Hyden, a small business owner who assembled a group of misfits to try and locate a possibly mythical stash of $2 million worth of cocaine on an island in the Caribbean.

Peter Steinfeld is writing the script, and Ferrell will produce alongside Jessica Elbaum for Gloria Sanchez Productions and David Permut for Permut Presentations. Love will also executive produce with Bryan Storkel.
Ferrell will star in Netflix’s spoof “Eurovision,” based on the popular international singing competition, which will be directed by David Dobkin. Ferrell recently parted ways with his partner Adam McKay at Gary Sanchez Productions. And he’ll also star in “Downhill” alongside Julia Louis-Dreyfus, which is directed by Jim Rash and Nat Faxon and will premiere at Sundance in 2020.
Ferrell is represented by UTA and Mosaic.
