Set in the 1950s, when racism in the United States was in full swing, a black sanitation worker, Troy Maxson, is deemed a social outcast for his unlawful activities like abusing his father, working as a robber, and serving time in prison for killing a man during a robbery. Later, he steps away from this life of debauchery and befriends a fellow garbage collector, Jim Bono, but fails to qualify for Major Leagues Baseball, which started accepting Black athletes in 1947. Thereafter, the viewers are introduced to his troubled relationship with his son, Cory, whom he doesn’t allow to join a football team, and Lyons, whom he coerces into working for a living. Troy’s flawed personality traits are further heightened by his cheating on his wife, Rose, and his neglect of his mentally impaired younger brother, breathing life into the emotionally complex character.
