Felicity Huffman's Prison Sentence Will Reportedly Be Shorter Than Expected

She only just began her time on Tuesday, but Felicity Huffman’s prison sentence has already been shortened. While it looks as though the actress will not, in fact, spend her full 14-day prison sentence behind bars, her abbreviated stint effectively amounts to a technicality. Either way, Huffman will reportedly be out of prison in less than two weeks.

So, here’s the deal. In September, a federal judge sentenced Huffman to 14 days in prison for her role in the college admissions scandal. She is also required, as part of her sentencing, to pay a $30,000 fine, serve 250 hours of community service and undergo supervised release for one year.

On Tuesday, she surrendered to authorities at the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, California, to begin serving her sentence. If you do the math, based on a 14-day sentence, that would mean Huffman should be released on Monday, October 28 or Tuesday, October 29, depending on whether Tuesday counted as a full day served.

However, TMZ reports that Federal Bureau of Prisons officials have confirmed Huffman will actually be released on Sunday, October 27. In other words, 13 days after entering the correctional facility.

Wondering what gives, and whether Huffman’s sentence will get any shorter? Per TMZ, the reason Huffman will spend one entire day less behind bars is due to the fact that she received credit for her initial arrest and booking when she was in custody for a few hours as they processed her. As for whether she’ll get any more time off, that seems unlikely at this point. In September, NBC News reported that Huffman would be expected to serve her full sentence because “there is no time off for good behavior in the federal system for sentences less than a year.”

Although a sentence that has essentially been shortened by one day may not seem like much, it’s getting attention due to the fact that prosecutors already conceded their original desires for her sentence. Initially, they stated they wanted Huffman to serve four months in prison. When the probation department pushed back, they compromised and asked for one month, ultimately receiving half of that.

And now, Huffman will reportedly come home in less than half of that. It sounds as though she has been humbled by this entire experience, so here’s hoping she puts her extra day of freedom to good use.
