It can’t have been an easy road getting here, but Felicity Huffman’s daughter is headed to college. The news that 19-year-old Sophia Macy has been accepted into a prestigious university comes one year after the college admissions scandal implicating her mom (and a slew of other wealthy parents) shocked the world. But now, Sophia is headed for Carnegie Mellon University — Huffman is reportedly “so proud” of what her daughter has accomplished despite it all.

Sophia’s father, Shameless star William H. Macy, clued her followers into the news on Instagram with a simple bio update: “CMU Drama ‘24.” Carnegie Mellon’s School of Drama is an elite theatre program consistently ranked as one of the best undergraduate drama schools in the country. So, understandably, the family has a lot to be excited about. It was less than a year ago, after all, that the teen’s invitation to a final round of auditions for admission into Juilliard was formally rescinded in the wake of Huffman’s scandal fallout.

“Felicity is so proud and grateful that Sofia has kept her chin up over the last year,” a source told People. “It was a painful, challenging time and she pulled through it with strength and grace.”

It merits mentioning that Sophia retook her SAT amid the drama and headlines stemming from her mom’s involvement in and subsequent arrest over the scandal.

In a 2019 statement, Huffman insisted Sophia had no knowledge of the scheme, saying, “My daughter knew absolutely nothing about my actions, and in my misguided and profoundly wrong way, I have betrayed her. The transgression toward her and the public I will carry for the rest of my life. My desire to help my daughter is no excuse to break the law or engage in dishonesty.”

As Sophia’s father, William H. Macy pointed out in court proceedings at the time, the teen didn’t even need SAT scores, which her mom was guilty of paying a proctor to change — Juilliard doesn’t require them. Still, she re-sat for the test, presumably fared well and now has an admissions letter from a top university to show for it.

Sophia isn’t the only one in the Huffman-Macy household who is paving her own way these days, either. Her younger sister, Georgia, will be heading to another prominent institution this fall: Vassar, in New York.
