February is Black History Month. Here are 22 Tampa Bay events celebrating it.

According to the Smithsonian Institution, the 2024 Black History Month theme is “African Americans and the Arts,” spanning the many impacts Black Americans have had on visual arts, music, cultural movements and more. Here are 22 Black History Month events happening in the Tampa Bay area.

Coffee With a Curator: Impressionism and Black History: In this month’s talk, Dallas Jackson explores how the Impressionist movement provided the foundation that many artists, and himself, use to develop their technical skills. He explains how artists like the Florida Highwaymen captured their environments through “en plein air” painting and how the Florida Highwaymen overcame racial injustice to create venues for their artwork. Black History Month: An Evening in Celebration of Frederick Douglass: Author and spoken word performer Nathan M. Richardson presents “Frederick Douglass Speaks on Democracy,” an interactive performance capturing the essence of writer, orator and abolitionist Frederick Douglass. Free. 6:30-8:30 p.m. Feb. 7. UNCF Black History Month Walk for Education and HBCU Homecoming Festival: The walk and community festival feature live entertainment, DJ dancing, games, face painting, a small-business vendors expo, food and handcrafted items. Black Love Classics Series: The third annual classic film series at Tampa Theatre takes on a “Faith, Food and Family” theme. The lineup includes:

• “Peeples” (PG-13, 95 minutes): In the 2013 comedy-romance, a surprise meeting with a potential fiance’s family goes awry. $10, $7 members. 3 p.m. Feb. 11.

• “This Is It: The Miracle of BBQ” (NR, 100 minutes): In the 2023 documentary, Tampa native Shelley “Butch” Anthony III tells the 40-year history of This Is It: Southern Kitchen and Bar-B-Q. Free. 3 p.m. Feb. 18.

• “Daughters of the Dust” (PG, 113 minutes): In the 1991 historical drama, members of an enslaved family are forced to decide if they’ll stay on their isolated island or move to a more modern way of living on the mainland. A panel discussion with the filmmaker follows the screening. $10, $7 members. 3 p.m. Feb. 25.

Soul ‘n Love Concert: An R&B Violin Experience: The third annual concert features an R&B violin experience starring acclaimed soul violinist Omari Dillard. $75-$92. 7:30-9:30 p.m. Feb. 12. New Tampa Performing Arts Center, 8550 Hunters Village Road, Tampa. 813-541-9366.

Black Family Business Workshop: The Hillsborough County Black Chamber of Commerce hosts this event for Black family businesses to show offy their businesses and share their story of how the family business began. $10-$15. 5-8 p.m. Feb. 13. 2101 E. Palm Ave., Tampa.

Collards After Dark: Black History Month: Author and “Soul Food Scholar” Adrian Miller discusses cocktails, coffee, soft drinks and wines preferred by past U.S. presidents. Includes a copy of “The President’s Kitchen Cabinet: The Story of the African Americans Who Have Fed the First Families, from the Washingtons to the Obamas,” drink samples and appetizers. $85-$150. 6-9 p.m. Feb. 16. Collard Green Festival: The festival geared toward general health and wellness through nutrition features a collard green cookoff, free collard greens, fitness and agricultural demonstrations, live music and a talk by “Soul Food Scholar” Adrian Miller. Florida’s Historic African American Homes: Author Jada Wright-Greene showcases contributions African Americans have made to Florida through historic photographs of Black Americans’ homes, detailing the lives of the people who lived in them. $5, $24.99 with book. 3:30-5 p.m. Feb. 18. St. Petersburg Black History Bike Tour: Join local historian Josette Green for a 5-mile bicycle tour highlighting sites of historical significance to St. Petersburg’s Black residents. Pinellas African American Heritage Celebration: The one-day festival showcasing the diversity of the African American community in Pinellas County features a mini-market of Black artisans and businesses, live jazz, gospel, R&B and poetry, visual and performing art exhibitions, keynote speeches by area politicians and historians, food trucks, a children’s play area and an interactive mural. Black History Bus Tour: This 1 ½-hour bus tour explores the local people, places, parks and museums relating to Black history.
