FBI’s Katherine Renee Kane Reacts to Finale Climax: ‘Tiffany Is Shook’

The FBI team — and viewers — were given quite a scare near the end of this season’s finale, when it appeared that an agent had shot dead an unarmed man.

This week’s episode revolved around the re-emergence of Hakim Siran, the terrorist who in the premiere was responsible for the death of Agent Hobbs, with whom Special Agent Tiffany Wallace was working undercover. Just a few weeks back, the very notion that Hakim had slipped back into the States had Tiffany on edge, so when he actually resurfaced this week, in the flesh, there was almost no telling how Tiffany would react — especially having just seen the commemoration of Hobbs’ passing be installed at HQ.

As the finale built to its climax, Jubal’s team tracked Hakim and a henchman to a country club. Scola took out the henchman, and OA was nearly taken out by a grenade. That left Tiff to get the drop on Hakim himself. But with Maggie’s view of Tiffany and Hakim’s standoff obstructed, multiple shots rang out. Hakim, who had seemingly just surrendered to Tiffany with his hands up, was dead. And no gun of his was in sight. But luckily, when OA arrived and turned over Hakim’s dead body, they in fact found the gun Tiffany said he’d went for. Afterward, Tiffany paid Hobbs’ widow a visit, with news of what happened.

TVLine spoke with Tiffany’s portrayer, Katherine Renee Kane, about the finale’s nail-biter of an ending, and how she herself first was startled by the hint of a very bad shooting.

TVLINE | What do you think is going through Tiffany’s mind as the episode comes to an end and Hakim is dead?
I think she’s shook. She’s really shook in the immediate moments after. There’s a lot of hesitation about what’s transpired. It happened so quickly, and I imagine that’s how it happens in real life when agents are pursuing a suspect. You have no idea what they’re going to do in a moment, and you try your best to choose the best response in order to protect your fellow agents, to protect the people you’re sworn to protect — and also yourself. So, I think it was really arresting, but she’s now able to breathe a little bit better, knowing that all things have resolved themselves. She can really close this chapter.

TVLINE | Were you, the actress, as relieved as Maggie, the character, was to find that there was a gun under the body?
Oh my god, yes! Because I was very, very worried—

TVLINE | I was like, this is about to get really dark.
This is about to get dark! [Laughs] Is this going to continue into some sort of [bad shooting] investigation? I was so relieved when we found that there was a gun, and that’s a testament to the writers’ room, how they like to keep the suspense up.

TVLINE | What have you been discovering about Tiffany over the past season or two?
I’ve been discovering that she has a lot of passion, and she leads with her emotions, and those can have positive and negative aspects. That’s absolutely something that’s been tested through the season. And I think that she’s coming into a lot more self-possession. She’s growing a lot, a coming-of-age in a sense, you know? Coming from the NYPD [as Tiffany does], it’s a different tone. I mean, they’re sworn to serve and protect in the same sense, but this is a whole other level of having to engage our intellect and our techniques and talents. I think has pressed her to think about her work and what she has to offer in any way, and to not lead so much bullish, but a bit more thoughtfully.

TVLINE | We also saw, though, that she can bring the fun and the sass. There was that early-season episode where she was went UC as a club girl who suffers no fools.
Yes! That was really fun. I like it when we can see the characters bring new colors, and I always like it when we can go undercover. Yeah, I think she has a lot of moxie, in ways, that is a little bit underplayed sometimes, but when it has the chance to come out, it is really fun.

TVLINE | What would you hope to explore next in future seasons, now that you all are renewed for another three?
First of all, I’m really, really grateful for that. Secondly, I would love to see her continue to have moments of release and sort of breath and have some levity — in her personal life, but also in her work life with her colleagues. I’d like to to see Tiffany continue to be, like, a badass agent, but also relax into life in a nice way. That would be really, really lovely.

TVLINE | It would be nice to, like, get some whiff of a romantic life going on in the background for her. Even if it’s just a passing reference to a bad date or something.
Absolutely. I do agree with you on that!
