A father-son duo relayed a heartwarming story after rescuing a young, trapped moose last week near St. Stephen, New Brunswick.

Shawn Matheson told CTV News that he and his girlfriend encountered the animal while out walking last Wednesday evening. Matheson claimed he tried to dig it out, but a lack of rescue tools or equipment made it impossible to recover the trapped moose.

But Matheson returned to the area with his father, Richard, the very next day to give it another shot, and detailed the adventure while posting corresponding videos and photos on his Facebook page last Thursday.

Together, the father and son used an electric winch to pull the “500- to 600-pound” moose out of the ultra thick mud.

After finally hauling out the animal following an hours-long struggle, the Mathesons provided water to drink and lily pads to chomp on before the majestic mammal felt fit enough to trot off into the woods a few hours later under its own power.

“Was a long an hot day,” Shawn wrote, “but we got it done.”
