Fat Joe continues to set the record straight after claiming that the majority of his lyrics are “lies,” insisting that the declaration isn’t an indictment on his street credibility.

On Wednesday (Dec. 13), the Bronx, N.Y. native shared a throwback photo of himself brandishing a gun on Instagram, joking that the picture was indicative of the authentic portions in his songs. “This was the other 5%,” the Terror Squad leader captioned the photo, which was presumably taken in the streets of the South Bronx during the early ’90s. Joe’s post received numerous reactions from rap peers who found his allusion humorous, with Fabolous going as far as referring to the emcee as “Gat Joe.”

The 53-year-old made waves earlier this month when he admitted to lying in “95 percent” of his music over the years while touching on the criminalization of rap lyrics. “I’ve been rapping professionally for 30 years — I’ve lied in almost 95 percent of my songs,” the “Lean Back” creator said at the time. “I’m being honest. I write like I feel that day. I’m just being creative. You couldn’t build a jail high enough for the lyrics I’ve said on songs which are all untrue.”

He continued, adding “I had to say 95 percent of what I say is a lie so that they can understand that it’s unfair to try some kids for the rest of their life with sh*t they might’ve not done,” he said. “What you gotta understand is that it’s creativity… now if I say I use my imagination, my creativity in my music don’t mean I ain’t live a real f**kin’ life in the streets.”

Fat Joe has gradually turned into one of the more visible rap stars of himself, reinventing himself into a cultural commentator and elder statesman. This past summer, he revealed that he once considered retiring as an artist, but that Eminem made him reassess his decision.

“You know, I owe Eminem so many favors. Like I have used my relationship with this guy to oblivion,” he told Rap Radar at the time. “You know he tried to talk me out of retirement!? I was in my mother’s house, shirt off, topless. My phone rings, it’s a number I don’t know. Thank God, I picked it up. It’s Eminem. He starts trying to convince me for an hour, ‘Don’t leave.’ He was almost depressed that I was leaving our era.”
