Fat Joe Calls Out “Femininity” In Male Hip-Hop: “It Seems Like A Trend”

Fat Joe has an issue with “femininity” in male Hip-Hop. On Friday (April 26), Joe hopped on Instagram to address what he sees as a “concerning” rise in straight men cosplaying as gay men. Joey Crack referred to the switch as a “trend” and told the LGBTQIA+ community that he has no issue with them. Joe then argued that the cosplayers wouldn’t have gotten that off in his era.
“Listen, guys, don’t misplace my words for the LBGT,” he said. “If you’re gay and you love to be gay, that’s your sh*t. That don’t got nothing to do with me. I got a best friend, a brother who’s gay. I don’t give a f**k. But this femininity — this thing that’s going on in boxing — you know the sh*t we see and [Ryan Garcia] saying he’s a girl. Come on man. You f**king around!
“I just wonder, right, because we’ve come a long way accepting everybody for who they are, and everybody should be accepted for who they are or what they wanna be in life. That’s not our business but I wonder if in the 90s — the golden era — where we had real, hardcore crews — It seems like a trend.”

He then reiterated that he has nothing against gay people. Joey hypothesized that the growing rise of men wearing dresses, nail polish, etc, is all a part of the trendy new style. Fat Joe feels that they aren’t gay, but rather taking somebody else’s swag. He then pondered whether a rap artist painting their nails would have been accepted during Hip-Hop’s golden era.
“I mean being gay has been around since before Christ. It’s always been there. People are born like that. Cool. I don’t have a problem with that, but it seems like a trend, like a style. So you got guys who I don’t think they’re gay but they’re painting their nails or they walking with Birkin bags. Unfortunately, it’s sad to have originators and then you have a lot of running with the swag or running with the style.”
“It feels like it’s been a new trend, new swag, a new style. Paint your nails, use a bag, wear a dress. I wonder if in my era, if it would be accepted like that if it was a trend. It would blow my mind to see what rapper would do that. I’m just saying, in my era, I don’t think we would have seen that,” he added.
While Joe didn’t say any names, tons of rappers or Hip-Hop related artists have embraced femininity. Rappers like A$AP Rocky, Tyler the Creator, Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Yachty, Drake, Kid Cudi, Lil Pump, Trippie Redd, and NBA YoungBoy have all sported nail polish.
During an interview with Vogue, Rocky explained why he wears nail polish. He asserted that men should be able to do things without being labeled “feminine.” “I feel like men should be able to do nail art without feeling feminine,” the rapper told Vogue.
