Who Is Farrah Aldjufrie’s Father and Kyle Richards’ First Husband?

Between Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Buying Beverly Hills Season 2, Kyle Richards and Mauricio Umansky’s marriage is the talk of the town. But Mauricio wasn’t Kyle’s first husband. Before she met Mo, Kyle was married to Guraish Aldjufrie. Her first child, Farrah Brittany, is from that marriage.

While RHOBH fans became invested in Kyle and Mo over 13 seasons, viewers didn’t get that same type of insight into her previous marriage. Who is Guraish Aldjufrie, and why did his relationship with Kyle not work out?

Who is Kyle’s first husband, Guraish Aldjufrie?

Like his daughter Farrah, Guraish works in real estate. Guraish, who is Indonesian, Arabic, and Dutch, is commonly referred to as a real estate tycoon, as well as a businessman and land developer. While he’s a pretty private person, Guraish occasionally shows up on Farrah’s Instagram. Despite his lack of interest in the spotlight, Farrah recalled, “his friend emailed him and was like, ‘Is that girl on Housewives really your ex-wife?’ And he thought he was hilarious.” She gushed, “my dad is the most shy, sweetest, nicest, cutest person in the world.”

Guarish was born in Indonesia on September 21, 1964. Today, he lives in Bali and mostly works in Thailand. But he’s always made sure to spend plenty of time in Los Angeles with his daughter. “We’re extremely close,” Farrah told The Daily Dish, “He comes and he stays for like a month or two at a time, two or three times a year.” Farrah also said Guraish often comes to LA for Thanksgiving and Christmas. In 2010, he appeared on camera to attend Farrah’s college graduation.

While Kyle gave birth to three more daughters with Mauricio, Farrah is Guraish’s only child. On the cast trip to Mexico in Season 12, Kyle revealed that Guraish never got remarried. “I feel so bad,” she said, “because he’s such a good guy.”

When did Kyle and Guraish get married?

Kyle first met Guraish at a Tina Turner concert in the late eighties. By that time, Kyle already dated in the public eye, thanks to her previous relationship with actor C. Thomas Howell. On a 2017 episode of the Juicy Scoop with Heather McDonald podcast, she shared her first impression of Guraish. “He was shy and cute,” said the former child star, “and I liked the fact that he was that- and sweet and very much a gentleman.” Meanwhile, Kyle was embarrassed she still had braces and tried to hide them. She also lied about her age, claiming she was already 19.

“He speaks good English, but he didn’t when we first met,” Kyle recalled. “He had not lived here long when he had to get up the courage with his English to ask me out on the date.”

They got married in a very low-key ceremony about a year later, in 1988. Kyle was 19 years old by that point, and later admitted it was “hard to be a wife at that age”. Guraish was 23. They were already expecting Farrah at the time. Their daughter was born the same year as their wedding, in October 1988.

Kyle has nothing but kind things to say about her first husband. She told Heather McDonald, “People said when I got married, ‘Oh well she married a prince.’ That was the rumor. He wasn’t a prince, but he just acted like one because he was very reserved and sweet.” Unfortunately, her obvious affection for Guraish wasn’t enough to save the marriage.

Why did Kyle and Guraish get divorced?

Kyle and Guraish got divorced in 1992 when Farrah was four years old. While Kyle has been cagey about what led to her and Mo’s split, the explanation for her divorce from Guraish has remained consistent. Ultimately, the timing wasn’t right. In Season 12 of RHOBH, Kyle admitted, “He loved me. We had a beautiful daughter together. I loved him. And I was just too young to be married.”

Kyle also felt bad for initiating the divorce because they still got along so well. Thankfully, that meant they’ve been able to maintain a very close friendship over the decades.

Kyle also kept a gift from him over the years. She showed off the Buddha statue when she gave Bravo Insider a tour of her backyard in 2022. “I’m sure [Farrah’s] going to take it away from me one day, but until then, I’m going to enjoy it. I actually really do love having this out here. It makes it very peaceful.”

While Kyle and Guraish’s marriage didn’t work, they continued to successfully co-parent Farrah. As Kyle told her co-stars, Farrah always came first. Once Mauricio came along in 1994, he took on the role of stepfather. On her social media, Farrah consistently makes sure to pay tribute to both of her dads.

Guraish and Mauricio get along famously, both personally and professionally. They bonded over their similar careers. Since they’re both in real estate, Farrah told The Daily Dish that Guraish refers clients to Mo “all the time”. Of course, Farrah followed in the footsteps of both her dads, as viewers can see on the Umanskys’ Netflix series.
