Farm and Fig is closing: Here's why this Cooper-Young eatery is shutting its doors.

Farm and Fig announced Friday that it will be closing at the end of January.

“As we look back on the remarkable journey of the past five years, we are deeply grateful for the steadfast support you’ve provided us. It is with a blend of gratitude and sadness that we announce that we have made the very difficult decision to close our doors at the end of January 2024,” read a statement on Instagram.

The popular prepared foods shop and catering company is closing due to the health of its co-owner and chef, Dino Grisanti.

“Unfortunately, our chef and co-owner Dino was diagnosed with cancer this summer. Due to focusing on his health, we lack the capacity to devote the full attention that Farm and Fig truly deserves,” the social media post stated.

A look back at Farm and Fig

Farm and Fig opened in November 2020 at 800 S. Cooper in the Cooper-Young neighborhood of Midtown Memphis. It had been a catering company for two years before opening the retail location in the spot that had formerly been Cooper Street 20/20.

“Having a retail shop makes our take-and-bake items more accessible,” said Dino Grisanti in 2020 of the decision to add a retail component to the business.

The menu included an assortment of frozen entrees, soups, freshly baked breads and desserts.

Many of the dishes had a Mediterranean influence.

Italians classics like lasagna, meat gravy and Florentine ricotta pie are nods to Grisanti’s family heritage. His grandfather Dino Grisanti founded Dino’s Grill in Midtown Memphis in the 1970s.

The offerings were not limited to Italian food. Dishes from around the world — like Kotopita (a Greek chicken pot pie), Moroccan Chickpea Soup and Vietnamese Meatball Soup — were popular menu items.

The shop was also known for its freshly baked breads and pastries created by Dino's wife, Carolyn.

A la carte breakfast and lunch service was eventually added to the concept, making the shop a popular end-of-week brunch destination.

Farm and Fig will continue catering events through January and operating the shop through Jan. 27.

“The Cooper-Young Community and our customers opened their arms to us, believed in our brand, and supported us every step of the way. We will be eternally grateful. Every good journey must come to a close, and the time has come for us to say our goodbyes,” Dino and Carolyn Grisanti said in the Instagram post.
