'Fargo' showrunner Noah Hawley to write and direct the new 'Star Trek' movie

Noah Hawley is all set to write and direct the next Star Trek movie.

Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker director JJ Abrams will continue to produce the rebooted series, under his Bad Robot banner, with Hawley also acting as producer.

Though it's not officially confirmed as yet, Variety reports that Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Karl Urban (Bones) and Zoe Saldana (Uhuru) will all be back on the deck of the Enterprise.

The fate of the franchise has been in a state of limbo since 2016's Star Trek Beyond.

Despite its household name status, the movie, which brought in Idris Elba as its main antagonist Krall, managed to lose the Paramount studio more than $50 million at the box office, bringing in only $343 million.

The series also suffered a tragic loss, following the death of Anton Yelchin, who played Pavel Chekov, in the lead-up to the release of the movie, his last performance.

In rebooting the reboot series of movies, director SJ Clarkson was attached at one point last year, along with Chris Hemsworth, who was set to reprise the role of Kirk's father, but it was shelved.

Hawley is perhaps best known for running the critically acclaimed Fargo anthology TV series for FX, producing all three series so far, with a fourth, starring Chris Rock and set in the 1950s, set to land next year.

He also ran the Marvel spin-off series Legion.

However, his feature debut, Lucy In The Sky, starring Natalie Portman, John Hamm and Zazie Beetz, stumbled on its release in October.

Making $320,000 from a $27 million budget, it's likely to be one of the biggest box office bombs of the year.

Currently, there's no release date slated for Star Trek 4, though there is another intriguing prospect in the pipeline.

Quentin Tarantino is currently developing a chapter in the movie series, with Mark L Smith writing, though there’s no news as to whether it would be a standalone movie or fit in to the current franchise story arc.
