‘Fargo’ Season 3 Premiere Recap: Ewan McGregor Lights Up Dark Comedy

Season 3 of Fargo premiered on Wednesday night, and writer-director Noah Hawley really hit it out of the park. While all the FX Fargo television seasons have been good, this one looks like it might be the most Coen-brothers-esque.

The show stars Ewan McGregor, who plays two brothers, Ray and Emmit Stussy. Emmit is a handsome and successful businessman, and Ray is a down-on-his-luck parole officer. Apparently Ray was bequeathed some valuable stamps, but Emmit, being the savvier brother, persuaded Ray to trade him an old Corvette for the stamps. Since then, Ray has had a chip on his shoulder.

Ray asked his brother to give him some money so he could buy his fianceé a nice ring — plus, he felt he was owed. When his brother refused, Ray came up with a plan to steal back his stamps. To do that, Ray asked one of his drunk parolees to do the dirty work in exchange for throwing out a failed drug test.

Maurice the parolee lost Ray’s instructions and ended up killing a seemingly random guy. Maurice told Ray what happened and then threatened to go to the authorities and tell them it was all Ray’s idea. Fortunately, Ray’s fiancée, Nikki, came with the idea of dropping a window-unit air conditioner on Maurice while he was smoking a cigarette.

But even though Maurice is dead, Ray’s troubles are only beginning, because that guy Maurice killed was a police chief’s father.

Fargo airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on FX.
