Christmas at the Palace: A Royal Family Album

As the sixth and final season of The Crown debuts on Netflix, PEOPLE is giving readers an exclusive look inside one of the season's most-anticipated shows.

In PEOPLE's new special edition, Christmas at the Palace: A Royal Family Album, available now, costume designer Amy Roberts opens up The Crown's closet, sharing insight into the series' most iconic looks.

"Everything on the principals is designed and made in our brilliant workroom," Roberts says.

As for whether any of the actors kept anything, "they usually have a little favorite, a belt or a necklace...they want one little memory," she adds.

Also inside the issue: Secrets from the set from set decorator Alison Harvey.

"We have a warehouse of ancient technology," says Harvey.

As for the interior style at Buckingham Palace, she says, "The Queen (Imelda Staunton) "doesn't change her decor." To update eras, Harvey swaps "lampshades and photos."

In addition to a special look at The Crown, Christmas at the Palace: A Royal Family Album, also brings readers inside the royal family’s holiday celebrations. From plum pudding to gag gifts to their morning walk to church,

The photo-filled issue also looks back at Christmases past, with insight into how Princess Diana navigated holidays with her in-laws, even after her split from Charles, and how Meghan Markle spent her first Sandringham Christmas alongside the Queen.

Also inside: What it takes to decorate Windsor Castle for the festive season and what the holidays look like for Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. Plus, delicious dishes on the royal holiday table (including the palace chef’s plum pudding!).

The Windsors routinely gather at Sandringham, their 20,000-acre rural estate in Norfolk. Following his mother’s death last year, King Charles stepped up as Christmas host. There’s gift-giving at tea on Christmas Eve—a German practice that Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, introduced in the mid-19th century. Christmas Eve dinner is black-tie, with the women in gowns.

On the morning of Dec. 25, the family makes the walk from Sandringham House to 11 a.m. services at St. Mary Magdalene Church, greeting the throngs of well-wishers lining their path.

Last year, the royal family came together for their first holiday without their matriarch. Despite Queen Elizabeth’s absence, those time-honored traditions were kept — and continue to live on today.
